This trip is starting from Shimla and ending at Manali. Arrive any time before 08:00 AM on Day 1 and depart 10:00 AM on Day 10.
Shimla to Sangla
Your journey begins as you depart from the former British summer capital of Shimla. You will follow the Hindustan-Tibet Highway, winding along the banks of the Sutlej River. The landscape gradually transitions from the lush cedar forests of the lower Himalayas to the more rugged, cliff-carved terrain of the Kinnaur district. By evening, you will arrive in the Sangla Valley, where the snow-capped peaks of Kinner Kailash provide a stunning backdrop for your first night in the mountains.
Dinner and overnight Sangla.
Sangla to Tabo via Nako
After breakfast, you will head deeper into the mountains, stopping at the high-altitude village of Nako to walk around its sacred lake. The road then leads you into the arid, desert-like landscape of the Spiti Valley. Your destination for the evening is Tabo, home to a UNESCO World Heritage monastery that dates back over a thousand years. The ancient mud-brick structures and delicate indoor frescoes here offer a quiet, spiritual atmosphere that contrasts beautifully with the harsh terrain outside.
Dinner and overnight Tabo.
Tabo to Mud Village (Pin Valley)
On the third day, you will visit the spectacular Dhankar Monastery, which appears to be carved directly into the crumbling cliffs overlooking the confluence of the Spiti and Pin Rivers. From there, you will enter Pin Valley National Park, a protected area known for its unique flora and rare wildlife like the snow leopard. The day concludes in Mud Village, a remote settlement that serves as the last motorable outpost in the valley, offering a raw and authentic Himalayan experience.
Dinner and overnight Mud Village.
Mud to Kaza and Rangrik
Leaving the Pin Valley behind, you will head toward Kaza, the administrative heart of Spiti. Along the way, you can stop at the Ecosphere office to learn about their impressive work in sustainable tourism and local conservation. Instead of staying in the busier town center, you will cross the river to the village of Rangrik. This area provides a more peaceful setting with expansive views of the valley, making it a perfect base for exploring the central Spiti region.
Dinner and overnight Rangrik (or Kaza).
The High Altitude Villages
This day is dedicated to exploring the legendary "High Villages" of Spiti. You will climb to Hikkim to visit the world’s highest post office, then continue to Komic, one of the highest villages in the world connected by a motorable road. The afternoon is spent in Langza, where a massive golden Buddha statue watches over the valley. This region is also famous for prehistoric marine fossils, which serve as a reminder that these towering mountains were once the floor of the Tethys Sea.
Dinner and overnight Rangrik (or Kaza).
Cultural Immersion in Demul
For a deeper connection to the local way of life, you will travel to the remote village of Demul. This community is renowned for its sustainable homestay system, where every household participates in hosting travelers. You can spend the afternoon interacting with the Spitian people, observing traditional weaving techniques, or hiking to a nearby ridge that offers a panoramic view of eight different surrounding villages. It is a day focused on slow travel and cultural exchange.
Dinner and overnight Demul (Homestay).
Ki Monastery and Kibber
The morning begins with a visit to the iconic Ki (Key) Monastery, the largest and most photographed religious center in Spiti. Built like a fortress on a conical hill, it houses a large collection of ancient scriptures and thangkas. Afterward, you will drive to Kibber, a scenic village surrounded by limestone cliffs. You will also have the chance to walk across the Chicham Bridge, which spans a dizzying gorge and stands as one of the highest bridges in Asia.
Dinner and overnight Kaza.
Kaza to Chandratal via Kunzum La
Your penultimate day takes you toward the ethereal Chandratal Lake, also known as the Moon Lake. The drive involves crossing the formidable Kunzum La Pass, where colorful prayer flags flutter in the high-altitude winds. After paying respects at the mountaintop temple, you will take the diversion to the lake area. You will spend the evening in the designated campsites nearby, witnessing the crystal-clear waters of the lake reflecting the stars in a truly pristine environment.
Dinner and overnight Campsite near Chandratal.
Chandratal to Manali via Atal Tunnel
The final stretch of your journey is a rugged drive through the boulders and water crossings of the Lahaul Valley. As you reach the Gramphu junction, you will enter the Atal Tunnel, a modern engineering marvel that cuts through the mountains. Emerging on the other side, the dry desert landscape instantly transforms into the verdant, pine-covered slopes of the Kullu Valley. Your expedition concludes as you arrive in Manali for a well-earned rest and a hot meal.
